Album Review: Green Day – Father Of All Motherfuckers

This album was released on 02/07/2020. Green Day is my favorite pop punk band, but this album may be more pop than punk. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. The Beatles themselves, who posed with butchered baby dolls and claimed to be bigger than Jesus (punk as fuck), also aspired to become the “Toppermost of the poppermost.” The line between rock and pop has always been blurred. And, like The Beatles, Green Day … read...

Lyrical Analysis: Hatebreed – Defeatist

Defeatist is a single from the 2006 Hatebreed album, Supremacy. Intro Hatebreed is one of my favorite hardcore bands. People think that the genre is for a bunch of posturing dudes with something to prove. But I disagree. And even if a bunch of losers were listening to it to feel tough, isn’t that the point? I feel shy and awkward all the time. I rarely ever feel like a badass. But Hatebreed is one … read...

Lyrical Analysis: Green Day – Macy’s Day Parade

Intro: Macy’s Day Parade is a single from the album Warning, released by Green Day in the year 2000. I consider myself to be a free spirit. I do what I think is right, even if it feels like the whole world is against me. I march to the beat of my own drum. I am neither a leader nor a follower, but a lone wolf. Living in my solitary, self indulgent fantasy land, sometimes … read...

Burning Churches, Burning Bridges: The Cognitive Dissonance of Being a Catholic Metalhead

St. Peter Martyr Exorcizing a Posessed Statue of the Virgin and Child, Vincenzo Foppa, 1468 Intro: All art is political. Religion and music are no exception. Many metalheads claim to be anti religion one minute, and then devil-worshiping Satanists the next. Others enjoy the music while still practicing their faith, whether it’s Judaism, Islam, or Christianity. To assume that all metal music is Satanic or Atheistic, is as asinine as assuming that all jazz fans … read...

Album Review: Collector – Liberation’s Fall

Collector is an indie metal band from Boston, MA. They have recently self-released their debut album, Liberation’s Fall. This record features fantastic guest musicians like Chris Broderick (Act of Defiance, Ex- Megadeth), and Vicky Psarakis (The Agonist). The band has continued to persevere, even after the loss of their collaborator, colleague, and friend, Warrel Dane (Nevermore, Behemoth, Sanctuary), who passed away in December 2017. This heavy, emotionally charged album does justice to his legacy. The … read...

Album Review: Deforme – God-Like Strength

Deforme is a conglomeration of brutal death metal and grind. The gutteral vocals are especially gruesome, with lead vocalist Juan Martinez growling and grunting like a demon from hell. The guitarwork of both Alex Camacho and Joe Baca shreds violently. The bassline from Blair Robey is strong and solid. The drumming is a sturdy skeleton for the whole musical package. No wonder their drummer is called “Beast”.  I love how the rhythm section sometimes steals … read...

Album Review: Cripple – Fuck Your Comfort

This band is “radical” in every sense of the word. Their music is extreme in all aspects. It’s fast, it’s loud, and it’s offensive as balls. Although a death metal influence is apparent, Cripple veers on the punk edge of the thrash spectrum. The simple riffs are short and catchy, with ornate solos. The violent vocals are pissed-off tirades of angry lyrics. The drums are crashing and rolling like a 7 car pileup. The result … read...

Album Review: Tithe – Tithe

This Portland, OR based metal trio is heavy handed in all possible ways. From their obscene cover art to their badass lyrical themes, this band is outrageous. No wonder their self titled EP was released on 04/20 of 2017. This is stoner metal if I ever heard it. What many would consider a “bad”trip, I would consider a “dark” or “morbid” trip. Instead of getting scared, I learned to enjoy the macabre images of … read...
